Whatever Way

from Malmoments by Ashley Scrace

/

about

One of my first recorded protest songs, speaking out against the situation in the UK where right-wing politics are sending the country backwards.

But it's not just in the UK - it is the world over where this is felt. And that's sad for everyone, not just minority groups.

That's why I wrote this song. It's a call to action; a way of saying that we need to stand up now to the decisions that are made without us and campaign for more open, transparent, beneficial politics for everyone.

lyrics

VERSE 1
I left home some months ago,
I couldn't stay in a place I hate,
Couldn't live a lie, could not ask why,
We're all enemies of the state.
Do as they say, you're fucked anyway,
You've got no right to fight,
The poor just hurt living on rich dirt,
Trying to get it right.

VERSE 2
It's a full-time job to find a job to find a job,
Then it's harder work to keep,
From despair, from life out there,
Suffocating you to sleep.
On the street there stands another homeless man,
Who isn't giving up the fight,
To show those in control, those in the know,
What they're doing just ain't right.

CHORUS (x2)
Hey now, listen to the drumming,
Hey now, our time is coming,
Hey now, we've got to keep running,
Whatever way tonight.

VERSE 3
I look back at my home and the town is gone,
There's hopelessness in the air,
You can feel the rage in the lies that were made,
So stop pretending you care.
It ain't just the poor but so many more,
Made to sit out once again,
Migrants, women, those without white skin,
To the Right are not citizens.

CHORUS (x2)

VERSE 4
The fight with knives, it costs our lives,
And hurts a community,
There's a light at the end of the tunnel if we let them know,
They're not part of our city,
Don't take up arms, you'll be disarmed,
Fight with words instead,
To find the truth through lies, to despise,
This role we did not elect.

CHORUS (x2)
